TikTok Introduces “Footnotes” to Combat Misinformation on Its Platform

TikTok has started testing a new feature called Footnotes, designed to provide additional context to potentially misleading or inaccurate posts. Inspired by the community notes model, this tool will allow users to add visible annotations next to videos, aiming to offer clearer and more balanced information.

Algorithm Will Decide If Annotations Are Displayed

TikTok explained on its official blog that users will collaboratively create the content of these contextual notes. The platform will display the notes only when its automated system considers them genuinely helpful for users. TikTok’s algorithm determines usefulness by evaluating multiple criteria, including consensus among people with contrasting perspectives. Users with differing viewpoints must agree on the context’s validity for the algorithm to approve and show the annotation.

Does Not Replace the Existing Fact-Checking Program

TikTok clarified that Footnotes will not replace its current fact-checking program. That system remains in place and continues to limit the visibility of content debunked by external fact-checkers, as part of the platform’s effort to curb the spread of false information.

A Trend Among Social Platforms

With this measure, TikTok joins other social media platforms that have implemented similar tools. X (formerly Twitter) already features Community Notes, a functionality that became established before Elon Musk’s acquisition in 2022. Meta (parent company of Facebook and Instagram) also developed its own contextual system, though it recently decided to deactivate its fact-checking program.

Initial Testing to Begin in the U.S.

The pilot phase of this new tool will take place in the United States. The rollout comes at a critical time for the company, as TikTok faces regulatory pressure in the country.

TikTok’s Future in the U.S. Remains Uncertain

TikTok, owned by Chinese firm ByteDance Ltd., must sell its stake in U.S. operations by mid-June to comply with a new national security law. Otherwise, the app could be banned in the U.S., raising concerns about its future.

ByteDance Under International Regulatory Scrutiny

This situation reflects the growing international scrutiny of Chinese tech companies. With the launch of tools like Footnotes, TikTok seeks to reinforce its commitment to content transparency and safety amid an increasingly tense geopolitical climate.
